Our emotional learning framework

The Generation Mindful Way

An Evidence Informed Approach to Emotional Literacy

Children aren’t born knowing how to regulate their emotions any more than they are born knowing how to tie their shoes. Regulation is a skill — and we can teach (and learn!) it, at every age.

Three steps

Notice the feeling. Pause and stay curious. Putting words to a feeling lowers the body’s defenses.
AWARENESS

Allow for the feeling. Instead of rushing past, dismissing, or denying an emotion, make space for it. Emotional safety is the doorway to emotional literacy.
SAFETY

Learn and grow from the feeling. Compassion brings connection. It reveals the unmet want, need, or lagging skill beneath a big feeling, and it brings love. Not fear. Not shame.
CHANGE

We don’t name it to tame it. We name it to feel it.

To “tame” a feeling is to control it. And the best way to do that is to regulate it... as opposed to dismiss or deny it.

Emotional literacy begins when we make it safe to feel. Because we cannot regulate what we cannot feel.

Three circles of change

One framework. Three circles. And you.

Circle One

You are where change begins

One adult. The person reading this framework. The circle nobody sees, and the one everything else rests on. Not a warm-up before the real work — it is where the real work starts.

What it looks like in real life

A 3-step system that works — even at 7:40 a.m. when you are tired and the child in front of you is dysregulated.

You get down low and “get curious, not furious”. You pause. You use simple words, or you say nothing at all.

You bring awareness.

You breathe. You offer comfort. The child is working to feel their emotions, and your presence makes that safe.

You bring safety.

Once calm, you connect and learn from the moment. Moving, talking, restoring, even playing.

You bring change.
